The magical Number 7.
It’s hard to imagine a life without memories, without the ability to remembring past events, knowing how we feel, how we behave, how human beings we are? life would be a series of incomplete, unconnected events, But what is memory and how does it work?
Memory is the faculty of the brain by which information is stored, It is the retention of information over time to influence future actions. If past events could not be remembered, it would be impossible for language, relationships, or personal identity to develop.
You can probably remember when you first met your teacher. You would have told your name and in the next class, he or she might have remembered it. But how did your teacher remember your name?
There are 3 stages of cognitive processing: Encoding, Storage, and Retrieval. In stage 1, when you told your teacher your name he or she transformed the sound of your name and encoded the representation into memory. In stage 2, your encoded name was stored in your teacher’s memory until you met in the next class when, in stage 3, your teacher retrieved your name from memory. if your teacher has forgotten your name theories of memory suggest that is the result of a failure of any one of these three stages it all about the duration and the capacity of information to process and storage (short-term memory and long-term memory), perhaps your teacher had too many new names to learn, resulting in your name not being stored in memory.
The next time when you would introduce your self did it in the minimum distraction place, or in a way that sticks in mind, the first impression is really important, we always remember the peaks and the ends not what happens between them because are always connected with feelings and emotions. People judge a discussion largely based on how they felt, rather than on the total sum or average of every moment of the discussion or the experience.
So to know how this magical number 7 relates to all that, we should know what is short-term memory? and how we can use it for better accessibility and clearance in our future designs and experiences?
STM is a place when the brain keeps some of the new information encoded, it has a limited storage capacity so when the amout of new information increases the probability of forgetting the oldest one it’s high and for some reason, it could not be retrieved. so number 7 is just a definition of how accessibility and clearance can be a hugely impactful way to scan the content and process the information to achieve a goal or to complete the task, and this is what miller’s law & research-based about.
